Atkins Diet - Preparing Mentally

Changing the way you eat and live is more than just a physical change in diet.  Instead, it is a transformation of self that needs to originate from within, so preparing mentally for your journey is the best method for success.

When hearing the Atkins Diet mentioned, most people immediately think of a restriction in carbohydrates.  While this is true, especially during the first phase (Induction), it is important to note that you will not be going without carbohydrates completely.  For this reason, preparing mentally to begin the Atkins Diet is not as difficult as one might imagine.  Utilizing a support group can be extremely beneficial, as can incorporating some type of stress relieving exercise, like yoga, Pilates, or Tai Chi.  As with any important change in lifestyle, taking the time to prepare mentally improves the likelihood of success by a large margin.

When considering support for your new change in eating habits, consider a group that is familiar with or incorporates the same Atkins Diet plan upon which you are embarking.  For instance, there are many web based Atkins support groups available, and most large metropolitan areas will have groups that meet in person, as well.  In addition to a formal group, think about the people in your life that you can count on for pep talks, motivation, and venting stress when things may be getting difficult.  A close friend, family member, or even co-workers can be great to lean on during stressful periods.

Another helpful preparation tip is to consider the foods you think you may be missing the most, and determine appropriate substitutions for them during the various phases of the Atkins Diet.  For instance, pasta lovers may want to investigate local Asian markets for Shirataki noodles, which are a great low carb and low calorie noodle substitute.  Trying a denser flat bread instead of regular wheat may help to alleviate cravings for a "real" sandwich.  The possibilities really are limitless, and with a bit of creativity, you are sure to come up with your own substitutions.  Often, just knowing that these alternate choices are available is enough to keep most dieters from weakening and cheating with regular foods.

Reading up on the science behind the Atkins Diet can lend a much better perspective and also provide some helpful tips, as well. Keep in mind that a healthy lifestyle includes much more than just your diet, and your success in losing weight will be that much easier.
