Diabetes & Heart Disease May Be Linked to Soda and Soup Can Linings

January 4th, 2012

In a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, volunteers who consumed a can of soup for five days within a week had over 1,000 times the levels of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA), which has been linked to heart disease and diabetes.  The landmark study is among the beginning research to determine the BPA levels in humans after they have consumed canned goods.  There are already documented studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that linked dangerous BPA levels to certain plastic drinking bottles.  Jenny Carwile, lead author of the study in Harvard’s Department of Epidemiology, stated “Previous studies have linked elevated BPA levels with adverse health effects.  The next step was to figure out how people are getting exposed to BPA.  We’ve known for awhile that drinking beverages that have been stored in hard plastics can increase the amount of BPA in your body.  This study suggests that canned foods may be an even greater concern, especially given their wide use.”   Besides avoiding canned foods and  polycarbonate bottles (recycling number 7), people with the disease should very carefully monitor their diet.  The diabetic diet plan is a great way to give your body the nutrition it needs without the unhealthy chemicals.

Medifast Coupons Help Woman in California Save Her Leg — and Her Life

December 13th, 2011

A recent article in a Stockton newspaper told of a local woman whose mother was visiting from Puerto Rico.  While in California she suffered from severe fluid retention in her legs and it became extremely painful for her to walk.  A doctor was contacted and he warned that she was in danger of losing her leg if she did not lose weight. The daughter contacted a personal health coach in Sacramento who placed the mother on the Medifast Diet plan. Mom lost 47 pounds over five months and was able to save her leg.  The Medifast Diet consists of six nutritious meals each day. The daughter, who became deeply involved in her mother’s recovery, has since become a certified health coach herself and is helping others fight obesity. She works in the Stockton area but also travels once a year to Puerto Rico. She is a big believer in the Medifast program and promotes money saving Medifast coupons because she knows the diet plan saves lives — including her own mother’s.

Tampa Man Loses Over 200 Pounds After Comprehensive Medifast Diet Review

November 23rd, 2011

In an interview in yesterday’s edition of Tampa Bay Online, Rob Redcay, a 56 year old Tampa Bay resident, explains how he lost over 200 pounds. After trying “every diet you can imagine”, and even undergoing gastric bypass surgery, Rob’s weight still hovered close to 390 pounds. He would have chest pains after walking just a few steps — and his blood sugar was out of control.  In February of last year, Rob’s wife attended a women’s health seminar and won a door prize — a copy of Doctor Wayne Anderson’s book:  Doctor A’s Habits of Health.  Dr. Anderson is a leader and co-founder of Take Shape for Life, the coaching program for the Medifast Diet Plan.  Redcay was skeptical, but read the book from cover to cover.  He then did a comprehensive Medifast diet review. He reluctantly started the Medifast program after learning participants generally lose two to five pounds per week. The very interesting article goes on to describe Rob’s experience, his outstanding success, and the lessons he has learned.

Who Offers the Best Diet Plans? The Answer May Surprise You

October 14th, 2011

What works best:  Low carb or low fat? High protein or high carb?  Weight Watchers , Atkins, or Medifast? Let’s admit it, there are an awful lot of programs to lose weight — but which are the best diet plans out there?  It isn’t always that easy to figure out which is the best program for weight-loss — but new research on the subject suggests it might not matter. According to a report on KCRG-TV, channel 45 in Dubuque, a study at Temple University concluded that folks who followed the Atkins low-carb approach lost approximately the same weight as those who followed a more traditional low-fat diet.  In addition, a study at Harvard tracked dieters using four separate plans.  The plans featured different amounts of fat, carbohydrates and protein.  This study agreed that, as long as overall calories were reduced, one diet was not better than the others.  Both studies covered a two year period.  The report concluded that dieters are best served when they choose a plan that works meets their personal preferences, as long as it follows healthy guidelines.

Mayo Clinic Emphasizes Importance of Proper Portion Control

September 30th, 2011

In a blog on nutrition published by the Mayo Clinic we are told that portion control is an important factor in both weight loss and a healthy diet.  Many people, however, have a poor sense of what constitutes a proper portion (or serving) of many foods.  To correct the problem, the blog suggests that people use either food scales or measuring cups.  However, when those are not available it helps to have visual clues to help judge proper portions.  For instance, three ounces of fish is about the size of a deck of cards; one-half cup of pasta is the size of a hockey puck; one serving of fruit is the approximate size of a tennis ball.

The article pointed out that our appreciation of correct portion sizes has been vastly distorted by the the amount of food served in restaurant meals.  The article also suggests that you test yourself by placing what you perceive to be proper portions on a plate or in a bowl.  Then transfer your portions to a food scale or measuring cup to see how you did.  With a little practice, you can soon learn to serve proper portions for optimum health and weight.

Many people today recognize that one of the safest and sanest diets ways to lose weight is by following the Weight Watchers plan.  A friend of mine said that she once lost 60 pounds on Weight Watchers, but sadly gained it back.  When she went to her doctor looking for a quick fix, she was told to go back on the safe diet that worked for her in the past. Top Diet Reviews: New Multivitamin Designed to Fight Aging Related Illnesses

August 17th, 2011

The San Francisco Chronicle today had an interesting article on the aging process.  Even though this is something no one can actually control, there are ways to deter the dreaded prospect of aging and growing older.  Experts attribute a healthy diet (see top diet reviews) and exercise to slowing down the aging process — but some people don’t change their habits until it is too late.  The article reports, however, that a new multi-vitamin, introduced last month as iAgeSmart, may assist people in their fight against illnesses which are age-related.  The formula is designed to provide extra support to the immune system.  This new multivitamin is one to keep your eye on because of its proposed ability to augment the body’s healthy aging process without masking underlying conditions.

How to Maintain a Healthy Diet While Eating Out

August 9th, 2011

The typical American lifestyle makes it hard to maintain a healthy diet while eating out. According to an recent article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the National Restaurant Association states Americans eat out at least four-five times a week. This is not just a matter of laziness or lack of discipline. With most households having two breadwinners, it often becomes not only a necessity, but a survival tactic! So, the question becomes: How does one diet while eating at restaurants? The key is to pay attention to how your plate is divided. It should be three quarters filled with plant-based foods (fruits and vegetables)–the more color, the better; the darker green your salad, the healthier your meal. This is the exact opposite of a typical restaurant meal, in which one would be served a slab of meat the size of Yankee stadium, with a few veggies squeezed in along the rim of the plate.

According to nutrition instructor, Connie Gutterson, author of the Sonoma Diet, a healthy plate would have only about four ounces of meat. In other words: Think of your meat as a side dish. This all calls for some creative ordering. For instance, you might try splitting an order. Also, be aware that most dieters think a salad is low calorie, but that’s not necessarily true. If you check, you’ll find that salads often contain higher caloric values than the main dish.  Blame that mostly on the dressing.  Here too, you need to get creative. Try lemon and herbs on your salad or a little olive oil combined with vinegar. And one final word on healthy eating out: Think 1) seasonal, 2) local, and 3) organic. It can be done –– and without sacrificing good flavor or a good time.

Michigan Man Loses 130 Pounds in 6 Months Following Medifast Meal Delivery Plan

July 29th, 2011

According to the Lansing State Journal this month, a local 50 year old man, Blake Anthes, was able to lose 130 pounds in just six months following the Medifast meal delivery system, which was recommended by his primary care physician.  According to Anthes: “I ate six times a day, five pre-packaged meals and one “real meal. The six meals kept me from getting hungry and going to the snack cupboard. I quickly learned about portion control, how to balance proteins and carbohydrates, how to maintain a good, consistent metabolism and just general overall good eating habits.”  Blake feels greatest challenge was simply learning how to balance foods.  “The diet plan is actually easy. The most difficult part of any diet is the six inches between the ears,” Anthes said.  “I really feel good for the first time in a long time!”
