Isolation Can Lead to Overeating

Do you feel overwhelmed about the prospect of revising ingrained habits?  Does the thought of battling strong temptation for the foods that have brought you comfort in the past seem overwhelming?  I am convinced that we human beings were not created to handle the type of pain that we sometimes have to carry, and it is no wonder that we find ways to dull the pain.  Eating is a convenient, pleasurable way to stimulate brain chemicals that connect to our pleasure center.  So how do we negotiate this life that is so wondrous and sometimes so hard without constantly turning to food?  We need to learn to go through the pain instead of dulling it.  And we need someone safe and caring to go with us through it — someone who will validate our pain, but will not give us permission to keep on hurting ourselves with food.  If you are overeating as a result of pain, whether from childhood or a more current wound, you should not try and tackle it alone.  Find a caring friend to go on the journey, and together you can encourage each other to make excellent choices!

How Much Exercise Do You Need to Lose Weight?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

According to Dr. Andrew Weil, MD, long-time contributor to Prevention Magazine, you have to spend at least 3-4 hours per week exercising in order to lose weight.  If your goal is significant weight loss, shoot for 5-6 hours per week.  Weight loss maintenance requires 4 or more hours a week of moderate to vigorous-intensity exercise.  The American College of Sports Medicine recently published a report in February 2009, of which Dr. Weil cites that your exercise regime should include strength training to build and tone muscles.  The American Diabetic Association says that a “lifelong commitment to healthful lifestyle behaviors emphasizing sustainable and enjoyable eating practices and daily physical activity” is required for successful weight management.  The most potent combination for weight loss is healthy food choices combined with vigorous activity.  Not only will you obtain the desired weight loss results, but you will enjoy enhanced energy, mood, and positive self-esteem.

Atkins Diet Plan Stands Test of Time

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Many people have learned the impact of refined carbohydrates on their health once the Atkins Diet Plan became popular several decades ago.  A resurgence of popularity in the 1990′s placed this diet plan solidly on the map as a great way for people who suffered from insulin resistance to heal their bodies and lose the excess fat in a manner that didn’t cause excessive hunger, fatigue and irritability.  Additionally, as the goal weight approached, Atkins taught dieters to slowly add in healthy carbohydrates choices in order to see what the optimal level of glucose was that the body operated on.  We also found out that there were healthy carbohydrates and not-so-good (or downright unhealthy) carbohydrates such as white breads, crackers, sweets, etc.  Atkins will always hold the distinction for helping America achieve solid steps to gaining control of their weight.

Sleep — Your Secret Weapon

Monday, March 1st, 2010

One of the biggest weight loss saboteurs is our tendency to operate in a state of chronic sleep deprivation.  Whether you are under a lot of stress and have a hard time relaxing at the end of the day, or you fall into bed exhausted, only to wake up in the middle of the night, insomnia can derail your weight loss efforts.  For reasons that are unfolding as more and more research is done, sleep seems to be the magic pill when it comes to pulling the whole dieting formula together.  It seems that when you are tired, your body craves refined carbohydrates for a quick jolt of energy.  Additionally, a lack of sleep seems to alter our body chemistry, causing it to not use macronutrients as efficiently as it should.  So do a little research — do you need to simplify and de-stress?  Is it time to deal with that nagging emotional issue that keeps you on edge?  Put yourself first on the list, and realize your weight loss goals.
