Diabetic Diet - Preparing Mentally

Just as with any other extreme change in habits, discovering that you need to tailor your eating and exercise to combat diabetes can be stressful.  You can greatly increase your likelihood of success by taking the time to prepare mentally for this new challenge in your life.

The first step in readying yourself for your new diet plan is to learn everything you can about diabetes: what causes it, how to alleviate symptoms, and what you can do to keep yourself healthy.  Take a trip to your local library or bookstore and read everything you can get your hands on about the disease.  A good physician will be willing to discuss every aspect of your condition and its treatment with you at length, so make sure you understand all of the information that you are given.

Next, stop thinking about your change in eating habits as a negative or temporary thing.  This isn't a fad diet that will drop pounds quickly, only to put them right back on.  It is, rather, a real change in lifestyle that will help you become stronger and healthier in the long term.  Don't focus on what you cannot do, focus on what you can and will do in order to make your body leaner, more fit, and better able to cope with challenges.

Talk to your family about the diet plan and changes in eating habits that you will be incorporating.  For almost all family members, the Diabetic Diet is a much healthier alternative to what they have been following to date.  Everyone can benefit from the variety of fresh foods and limited refined sugars and carbohydrates that the Diabetic Diet offers, so if you can encourage your family members to do it with you, your chances of success will increase greatly.

Finally, make sure to have a plan in place.  Understand where your weaknesses lie, and decide right now how you will handle the situation when temptation calls.  If you do not have a plan in place, you may very well struggle to deal with these types of situations.  Learn which snacks can be substituted for various cravings, whether they be sugary, salty, crunchy, or creamy.  Be sure to share these suggestions with your friends and family members so that they, too, will be armed with ideas for you when you feel yourself caving in to cravings.
