eDiets Diet - How Not to Fail

There are many reasons why people often fail when attempting to make lifestyle changes and lose weight.  Chief among them is the fact that many people have unreasonable expectations and simply give up too quickly before their body has had a chance to show results.

Even with the modern advances in science and medicine today, there are many real reasons why people continue to struggle with weight loss.  Here are the top 4 pitfalls in dieting and how you can avoid them.

  1. Slowing metabolism.  As we get older, our metabolism slows down considerably.  That's why it may feel like losing weight at 30 is much harder than it was at age 20.  Also, a habit of on again, off again dieting can train your metabolism to hoard the energy you consume and store it as fat.  The best way to combat yourmetabolism is to feed it consistently, with healthy, low fat food, and then to incorporate some exercise in order to force it to burn that food.
  2. Giving up too quickly.  Whether you have reached a plateau and the scale stopped moving, or have experienced a set back, the worst thing you can do at this stage is to give up.  If you have succumbed to temptation, start getting back on track right now - not Monday morning.  If you have seen some progress, but are having trouble taking it to the next level, try ramping up your activity a bit more.  Circuit training and incorporating a little strength training with your cardio exercise can do wonders to get the needle on that scale moving again.
  3. Looking for a quick fix.  A diet is not a temporary situation, and like any other health benefit, needs to be a permanent lifestyle change.  This doesn't mean that you can never have a slice of cake, or pizza, or a chocolate shake.  It simply means that those choices need to limited and spaced out.  Thinking that you can cram a fad diet into 7 consecutive days and see results is only setting yourself up for failure.  Think about making good choices for the benefit of your health, and the rest will take care of itself.
  4. Forget skinny, all ready!  Your goals need to be achievable and realistic, and for almost everyone, 'skinny' is not really an option.  Furthermore, it's not a healthy option.  Spend more time thinking about how great you feel when you're eating right, and less time thinking about the number on the scale, or the one on the tag of your clothes.
